Promoting the preservation of the cultural heritage and historic resources of Louisiana through education, technical assistance, outreach and advocacy.

Education:

  • Provides ongoing Heritage Education training that empowers teachers with tools to stimulate an interest in our historic preservation and Louisiana’s unique cultural heritage.
  • Have trained more than 150 teachers since 2000, affecting more than 5,000 LA K-12 students
  • Co-sponsored 2006 & 2007 Colonial Williamsburg Teachers Workshop, involving teachers statewide, with the McMains Foundation and the Louisiana Resource Center for Educators.
  • Published and distributed LA Heritage Education Handbook “Effective Heritage Education Programs in Louisiana.
  • Has cooperated and participated in heritage education projects with the Louisiana Division of Historic Preservation and the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training.

Technical Assistance:

  • Provides a statewide network for preservationists to exchange information through the newsletter, internet, annual conference and workshops.
  • Partners with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Foundation for Historical Louisiana and Preservation Resource Center in distributing technical assistance state-wide.
  • Maintains a current list of local preservation organizations in Louisiana
  • Supports the LT. Governor’s Louisiana Rebirth initiative by promoting rural tourism, partnering with the Louisiana Main Streets Program, and protecting Louisiana’s historic integrity.

Outreach:

  • Distributes Quarterly Newsletter Statewide
  • Initiated Statewide Annual Preservation Awards
  • Assists the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, local preservation organizations and the National Trust in promoting heritage education, cultural tourism, community awareness of Louisiana’s historic and cultural resources.
  • Ten Most Endangered Historic Sites List program focuses critical attention to historic preservation needs statewide. List is currently announced semi-annually so the Louisiana Trust can provide ongoing assistance and attention until the site is saved.

Advocacy:

  • Advocates for preservation legislation and funding on the state and national levels.
  • Helped pass the Preservation Property Tax Abatement for homebuyers who renovate historic properties.
  • Introduced legislation for a historic homeowner state income tax credit.
  • Secured funds for the development of a master plan to preserve and promote the Mississippi River Road Corridor.
  • Helped defeat HB 884 in committee for the Vieux Carre Property Owners, Residents & Associates & French Quarter Citizens. The defeat of this bill maintained the zoning limitations to protect the integrity of the historic properties in the French Quarter.
