Riverlake Plantation

Riverlake Plantation is a raised Creole style house constructed for Antoine DeCuir around the time of his marriage in 1823. By the 1908s, when Riverlake Plantation was added to the National Register of Historic Places & documented for the Historic American Buildings Survey, the upper timber portion of the east pigeonniere in front of the house was missing. The brick base of the structure has since been removed. The fashion of having pigeonnieres was popular in French Louisiana well into the nineteenth century. Today, only a handful of these original structures remain. As important examples of early Louisiana architecture & the birthplace of celebrated author, Ernest Gaines, Riverlake Plantation has the opportunity to teach us much about life along False River.
