Sikes High School

This school replaced an earlier one-room schoolhouse when the Sikes High School was established. Completed in 1929, this two story building housed grades 1-6 on the first floor and grades 7-12 on the second floor in a very rural area of north central Louisiana. The red brick structure was designed with large paired windows in each classroom providing plenty of natural light for students. Additions to the side of the building and a stand alone gymnasium were built later in the 20th century. Both the elementary school and high schools closed in late 1980s and have sat vacant ever since. Many classrooms stand untouch but neglect and roof damage progress throughout the building. The school holds many memories for local alumni. The Sikes Wolf Creek Handicraft Guild and local Council on Aging are partnering to find ways to save this school. They have begun campaigning to save the school at recent festivals and community functions. It is in need of major renovation and fundraising to restore it to a functional condition. A long term plan is also needed to determine feasible uses for the building.
