Col. Thomas Sully constructed the original portion of the house with four rooms separated by a wide hallway facing the Bogue Falaya River. In 1889, the property became the summer residence for New Orleans Mayor, Walter C. Flower, and his family. It later sold to New Orleans cotton broker, Leon Gilbert, who raised the cottage and incorporated usable space on the ground level. In recent years, it has served as a restaurant and bed and breakfast venue. In February 2024, the property was seized and went into foreclosure. There is uncertainty on how soon the property title can be resolved and the future of this historic site is unknown.
